Breast Imaging and Women's Health

Women’s Health imaging is primarily associated with breast imaging, such as mammography, breast ultrasound, and breast MRI. Other facets of Women’s health in radiology include gynecologic imaging and procedures treating various breast and gynecological conditions.

Mammography

There are two main types of mammogram: screening and diagnostic. At our women’s health center, a screening mammogram is used to detect early breast cancer in otherwise asymptomatic women. We use a diagnostic mammogram to evaluate a patient with clinical symptoms and/or an abnormal screening mammogram, including clinical findings such as a breast lump, breast pain or nipple discharge. We can also read a 3D mammogram or breast MRI scan.

Is Breast Tomosynthesis Better Than Standard Mammography?

A 3D mammogram, known as tomosynthesis, is a new way to look at the breasts. Multiple studies show 3D mammography has improved accuracy, reduced false-positive callback rates and increased cancer detection rates when compared to 2D digital mammography in certain groups of women. FRMG radiologist physicians are trained in 3D mammogram/tomosynthesis interpretation.

Detecting Breast Cancer up to Four Years Before You Can Feel It

Most major organizations that publish guidelines for breast cancer diagnosis recommend annual screening mammograms starting at age 40 (including the American Cancer Society, National Cancer Institute, American Medical Association and American College of Radiology). Research has shown that an annual mammogram leads to early detection of breast cancers from 1.5 to 4 years before a patient or physician can feel them, when the cancer is most curable and when breast-conservation therapies are available.

When to Begin Screening

Women who have had breast cancer and those who are at increased risk due to a family history should seek expert medical advice about whether they should begin screening before age 40 and about the frequency of screening. In addition, some women with particularly high risk should talk to their doctor or breast specialist about whether they should consider an annual screening breast MRI scan at our women’s health clinic.

We recommend that most high-risk women begin by getting a screening MRI scan and mammogram at age 30, unless they and their doctor think it is better to begin at a different age. At our women’s health clinic, we believe in empowering women to make the best choices for their health and peace of mind.

Other Women's Health Services

As part of our women’s health clinic, we also perform uterine artery embolization, an interventional radiology procedure that uses a catheter to deliver small particles that block the blood supply to the abnormal uterine body. We use this interventional procedure for the treatment of uterine fibroids and adenomyosis.
